thanks to a little nudging from claire, i just wrote out a few new year's resolutions for 2012:

1. be more patient
2. be a little more neater
3. lose my fat ass

i could go on w/ the pledges to make myself a better person, but these three seem reasonable enough to achieve over the course of the next 12 months.  well, i may be pushing it w/ #2, so we'll see what happens w/ that.  & i'm not even going to touch "get organized" or "stop procrastinating" b/c i know my limitations.

this is all coming from a kid who's known the truth since day one, but still has the imagination to believe.  gosh dang, i love her so.

i've never been able to sit through "it's a wonderful life."  "a christmas carol" & "miracle on 34th street" are kinda slow-going, too, which is why i choose "die hard" as my favorite movie to watch during this joyous time of year.

twas the afternoon before christmas

laundry is done.  the dishwasher is running.  short ribs are cooking for tomorrow's christmas lunch w/ carl's family here at the apartment.  music is being converted & uploaded to my new ipod.  claire's reading her guinness book of world records... well, now, playing w/ gryffin.  carl's knee-deep in football.   & i'm contemplating a walk to natural -- it's gotta be jammed-packed on austin street though -- for a few last-minute items.

oh, maybe i'll just skip the crowds & enjoy this clip from one of the best christmas-themed TV episodes ever... (i love you, laverne.)

thank you so much to my family for the best'est holiday present ever: a 160gb ipod classic.  it's even engraved w/ my name on it.  so frickin' cool & a huge surprise.  i mean, yes, i did have it listed on my amazon wish list, i just never expected to actually get one.

i've actually chuckled out loud more watching "hall pass" this evening than most movies i've seen in awhile.  carl picked well.  (wow, that is something i never thought i'd say, but there you go.)

after one day of baking -- thank you, jeannette for joining us -- & one day of decorating, the cupcakes are ready for our kids' holiday class parties tomorrow.

this time around, we baked 100+ vanilla-butter & chocolate cupcakes -- burned about 30 or so ("cupcake wars" is so not in our near future).  we got the snowman idea by mashing-up two versions we saw online.

i think they're pretty snazzy, no?

after watching the jimmy kimmel video on youtube of parents who gave their kids crappy presents & taped their reactions, i was curious to see what claire's would be, so carl wrapped-up 3 boxes of kraft mac & cheese & hid it in the dishwasher.  (we stashed her real present -- a digital camcorder -- in a big pot.)

any old ways, when the putch opened her "gift," she didn't pitch a fit or throw a tantrum.  didn't cuss us out or spew hateful words.  didn't say anything negative, in fact.  she just thanked us & even commented on how she thought it was cool that the pasta was winter-themed.  then, when we informed her that it wasn't the real present... she drew a sigh of relief, said she was scared there for a moment & plotzed when she found the camcorder.

it's the hap-happiest time of the year

ya'd think an anti-social/non-practicing gal like myself would despise the holiday season, but i gotta say, i do dig it -- always have.  i like gift-giving (& getting's not so bad), everything looking so festive & people acting more cheery... what's wrong w/ that?  i mean, sure, i don't jive w/ the whole "jesus" angle of christmas (jew or not, the story seems fishy to me) & i don't recite the prayers when lighting the menorah on channukah (i admit, even if i did remember the words, i wouldn't know what they mean b/c i don't speak hebrew) & that may lead some to believe i'm not worthy of celebrating, but to them, i say, "scrooge you."

i'm just oozing holiday spirit

spending my saturday evening adding songs to my i'm such a sucker for the holidays playlist on spotify & watching the christmas episode of "it's always sunny in philadelphia."  i should wrap presents for tomorrow's channukah party at my mom's place, too, but i'm just going to wait until the last minute & then stuff them into gift bags.

[update: it's sunday morning & the gifts have yet to enter the bags.  i've got about an hour before we leave for the city.  guess i should get dressed & take care of the "presents" situation now, eh?]

"dexter" is over.  not the best episode, though it had it's moments.  gonna give "adjustment bureau" a whirl now -- choice is out of my hands tonight.  not the biggest fan of matt damon's & the ratings say it contains only "mild violence," but i'm open to it.

"going out" is so overrated

baluchi's just delivered dinner (thank you so much, carl) & last week's episode of "dexter" that i missed is on TV.  all i gotta do is find a C-movie to watch after that & i'll have hit the trifecta this friday night.

i've been looking for claire's old bedtime album, "rockabye baby! led zeppelin," but can't find it anywhere.  haven't listened to it in years, but i had a hankering to play it this evening when i put the putch to sleep.  hopefully it'll show up.  i mean, it can't just walk out of the apartment -- it's gotta be somewhere.

what's funny -- besides the student teacher's responses -- is that my dad called while i was scanning these pages & when i questioned his parenting decision to allow me to watch "carrie" at such a young age, he said it was fine & referred to it as a "kids" movie b/c it was set in high school.  gotta love it.

very lazy saturday here at the borgatti household.  it's past 9pm & i'm still in my bathrobe.  i was going to take the putch to see santa & do other holiday stuff 'round town, but she was feeling under-the-weather.  instead, we stayed home w/ carl, played video games/board games (yay, simpsons monopoly), watched mindless TV & youtube videos... & that's about it.

some would consider this a waste of a day... and, well, yeah, they're right, but sometimes that's okay.

gonna finish watching "the mechanic" now.  so far, not that impressed.

some things are better left in the past

so, while we were all on a muppets high, we tried to watch "emmet otter's jug-band christmas" on netflix.  well, that didn't go off so well.  we couldn't get past the first ten minutes before the kids were complaining that it was slow & boring (which it was).

i haven't seen "emmet" since it was on HBO when i was a kid.  & i remembered it being so much better than it was.

oh well, sometimes you just can't go back.  well, maybe a little w/ this clip, but really that's it...

never watched an episode of "how i met your mother" & was not a big fan of that "sarah marshall" movie, but dang-boy-howdy, do i ever have a silly crush on jason segel now after taking claire & her friends to see "the muppets" movie.  so freaking clever & funny -- did not expect that.

has it really been almost a week?

last i posted was about six days ago.  not much has gone on since then except for some volunteering/PA stuff at claire's school, playdates & a whole bunch of futz'ing around -- i'll be more productive next week, promise.  (actually, i got the holiday cards out this week, so that's something.)

any old ways, the putch is at a sleepover -- i've got a free night on my hands, so, what am i gonna do?  well, for starters, i'm gonna cook dinner, add nonsensical items to my amazon wish list & watch a movie on cable that i'm surprised i've never seen before...

i already shared a "charlie brown thanksgiving" in a previous post, so i'll just wish everyone a happy, healthy thanksgiving & leave it at that.

a wee smidge behind

the turkey just went into the oven.  that's about two hours later than expected.  so, let's see... if it's s'posed to cook for 4-1/2 hours, which means 5+... well, we'll be skipping the matinee & seeing an evening showing of the new "muppets" movie.

on to watching some of the parade on TV w/ the family & prepping the rest of the food while the bird cooks.  (and yes, carl, you were right... those crowds would've been torture if we went into the city to see the parade.)

carl is home from atlantic city.  peapod & fresh direct have made their deliveries.  and, claire is officially off for the rest of the week.

time to relax & unwind w/ the family before the cooking madness ensues tomorrow morning.  actually, i just took a batch of brownies out of the oven, but i would've made those regardless of the upcoming holiday.

in the grand scheme of things, this really isn't the hardest part

stuck at home waiting for carl, peapod & fresh direct to arrive.  can't really complain.  i've got my music, TV, computer & then some to keep me occupied.  and of course, there's always the apartment to take care of, too, but that's no fun...

all by myself

so, in an odd turn of events, claire is now sleeping over at her friend's apartment, which leaves me here at home all by my lonesome.

no offense to my family, but... nice.

claire had her friends over for dinner & a playdate after school today, which has now led into one of them sticking around for a sleepover.

am i meshuga?  perhaps.  i mean, i'm kinda hopeful that come 8:30pm, the girls'll be on their way to dreamland, but we'll see what happens.  so far though, i'm like the coolest mom in the world.

w/ carl in atlantic city till wednesday, i'm holding-off on watching our sunday night shows till he returns home -- we'll catch-up w/ them together on-demand later in the week.

so, what's a gal to do on a sunday night?  well, the putch is asleep, etta james is on spotify & i'm about to treat myself to an episode or two of "high school of the dead" on netflix -- i'll prolly cap that off by falling asleep w/ the food network on TV.  pretty decent plans, if'n yooze ask me.

went to see foo fighters w/ my fellow cejwinite steve hudes & we had us a good ol' time, despite having two beers accidentally tossed all over my coat & seat by a group of kids behind us (and yes, i used the word "kids" to describe individuals in their mid-20's.  i'm that old.)  at least we were standing at the time so i didn't get doused -- that woulda stunk.

btw, special guest appearance by joan jett at the end of the evening made getting home at 1:25am not sting as bad as it should've.

i spent the day at tho's place making 80+ halloween cupcakes for our kids' class parties. we based our design on a photo that tho had on her phone. it was our first time doing ganache & piping, so personally, i think we did a pretty darn good job.

so, after (luckily) claire and i got back from adventureland today (which, yeah, was a blast -- go, frisbee), the car died. hopefully, it's just battery woes and a new one'll bring it back to life. we'll find out tomorrow after a trip to sears auto shop.

went to the museum of natural history and central park w/ claire and carl today. did a lot of walking, which made me feel not-so-guilty about our "video game & movie" marathon when we got home -- the game, "little big planet 2"... the movie, "osmosis jones" -- before claire's bedtime.

how i've been staying cool in this hot-as-ass weather

"harry potter," last night. "captain america," this afternoon.

did not expect that trailer for "shark night 3D" (or whatever that facakta movie is called). at least there were no real scenes shown, just a girl swimming and a shark appearing. yep, claire should still be taking baths after exposure to that, unlike the damage done to me thanks to my parents taking me and my younger sister bonni to see "jaws" in the theaters. yeah, good idea.

ooh, look at me rambling on and almost turning this into a therapy session. i'm just gonna post and move on to getting those vacation photos posted.

who knew a 5-night family cruise could rock so much?

managed to pack in time for our trip to canada that left from the NY port last saturday morning. the cruise was a bunch of fun, pretty relaxing, and just cheesy enough w/ the shows and activities. there were no elvis impersonators, which was nice b/c i'm still not over the one who showed-up to my 25th surprise birthday party (thanks, mom and dad for that traumatizing experience). and, there was a casino to waste time (and money) in while claire was in kids camp, so i had all that going for me, which was nice.

any old ways, i'm pretty tired, so i'm gonna sign-off, relax and come back to writing about the trip later on.

(gosh darn, i miss the cruisin' life. that's for sure.)

day two of my mother-in-law's viewing is done. thank you to all of our friends and family members who came by over the weekend -- your love and support was/is greatly appreciated.

tomorrow morning is her funeral.

spent my last night being 41 w/ my friends grace and tho. had a great time yammering away and stuffing ourselves w/ mexican from 5 burros on austin street.

now i'm ready to face my birthday. come n' get me, 42.

the movie stunk, but being w/ tho made the experience quite nice.

first day camp bus blues

the bus picked-up claire 35 minutes late this morning and dropped her off over an hour after she was s'posed to be home this evening.

happy birthday, USA

decided to skip the annual trip to wilmington, VT, to stay home and watch the fireworks from our balcony (dang you, macy's for moving it to the hudson this year).

went to the park... watched the coney island hot dog eating contest on TV... and now, gonna play a little wii before deciding what to do next.

toning it down tonight

taking a break from explosions, guns and flying strippers (thank you especially to "x-men: first class" for the latter) and just popped "blue valentine" into the playstation 3. as long as i pay attention to ryan gosling's hairline, i'll be golden.

[update: sheesh. this movie is far from mellow and very intense.]
